God Wears Lipstick

This past Friday Night Light we discussed the first chapter of Rob Bell's book, Sex God. We discussed the significance of the transformation in the dying inmates at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp after a shipment of lipstick arrived. We wondered whether it is necessary to see a 'spark of God' in others in order to value them as individuals. We also discussed secular humanism, medical ethics, Islam, oppresion of women, looking for good in others, looking for God in others (and why some might find this offensive), and how our view of God determines the way we live.

This is Really About That

This past Friday Night Light we enjoyed fondue and discussed the introduction to Rob Bell's new book, Sex God. We wondered why Bell introduced his book with Jacob's experience at Bethel. We pondered the meaning and validity of 'this is really about that.' We also discussed epicureanism, stoicism, 19th century Adventist morality, experiencing God out of the box, community, and what would be our ideal church.

Friday Night Light

This is a blog for Friday Night Light a Bible study and book discussion group beginning this coming Friday night August 17, 2007 at 6:30 P.M. (E-mail me if you need directions by clicking on my picture to the right).

Here you will find weekly posts introducing and discussing the topics we will cover. The first book we will read will be Sex God by Rob Bell. Publishers weekly writes, "[Bell] does a fine job using the Bible and real life to show that our physical relationships are really about spiritual relationships. This book joyfully ties, and then tightens, the knot between God and humankind."

This coming weekend we will discuss the introduction. Don't worry if you are unable to read the introduction before Friday night. It is short and the concept is simply "This is really about that." Really, don't worry, it will become clear what this is referring to very quickly and you will be able to join right in the discussion.
